Everything You Need to Know Before Renting a Tesla Cybertruck

By Jonathan Hsieh · February 2026 · 10 min read

You’ve seen it on the road. You’ve seen it on TikTok. Maybe you’ve Googled “can you rent a Cybertruck” at 2 AM. The answer is yes — and if you’re in the Chicago area, you can rent mine.

I’m Jonathan. I host a gloss black wrapped 2024 Tesla Cybertruck on Turo out of Palatine, IL. I’ve done 33+ trips with a perfect 5.0 rating. This guide covers everything — the specs, the features, what pickup is actually like, and what makes this truck different from every other Cybertruck you’ll find online.

What Is the Tesla Cybertruck, Actually?

The Cybertruck is Tesla’s all-electric pickup truck, and it looks like nothing else on the road. Stainless steel exoskeleton, angular lines, no paint (unless it’s wrapped — more on that in a second). It’s built like a concept car that somehow made it to production.

Key Specs

Horsepower600+ hp
0–60 mph4.1 seconds
Range325 miles
Screen18.5” touchscreen

The short version: it’s fast, it’s electric, and it turns every parking lot into a photo op.

The Aesthetic: Why People Can’t Stop Staring

Before we talk features — let’s talk about the thing that actually makes this truck special. It’s the aura.

The Cybertruck doesn’t look like any vehicle on the road. The angular lines, the massive LED light bar, the flat geometric panels — it looks like it drove out of a sci-fi movie. People stop and stare at red lights. Kids point from the sidewalk. Strangers walk up in parking lots to ask questions. Every single guest tells me the same thing: “I didn’t expect this much attention.”

And with the gloss black wrap, it hits different than the bare stainless steel trucks you see everywhere. The black transforms it from “look at that weird truck” into something that looks like a luxury vehicle from the future. It photographs like nothing else on the road.

Autopilot: The Feature That Changes How You Think About Driving

This is my favorite feature on the Cybertruck, and it’s the one that surprises guests the most. Autopilot isn’t a gimmick — it genuinely changes how driving feels.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system can drive the truck almost anywhere. On the highway, it handles lane changes, follows your navigation route, navigates around vehicles, takes exits, and adjusts speed for traffic — all while you supervise with your hands on the wheel. It’s not full autonomy, but it’s the closest thing to it that exists in a production vehicle right now.

Here’s what it actually does:

  • Highway driving — From on-ramp to off-ramp, the truck handles lane changes, merges, and interchanges. Set your destination and it navigates the expressway for you.
  • City streets — FSD handles turns, intersections, stop signs, and traffic lights on surface roads. It’s eerily smooth.
  • Traffic-Aware Cruise Control — Adjusts speed automatically for vehicles ahead. Set your following distance and forget about it.
  • 360-degree awareness — Cameras on all sides give you a real-time view of everything around the truck. Blind spots don’t exist.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking — The truck reacts faster than you can. It detects potential collisions and brakes before you even register the danger.

I walk every guest through Autopilot during the pickup walkthrough. We do a demo drive together so you can feel it in action before you head out on your own. Most people say it completely changes how they think about driving — once you experience highway cruising on Autopilot, going back to a regular car feels like going back to a flip phone.

Steer-by-Wire: It Drives Like a Go-Kart

This catches every guest off guard. The Cybertruck uses steer-by-wire — there’s no physical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels. It’s all electronic.

What that means in practice: a half turn of the steering wheel is a full turn of the wheels. A normal truck takes about 2 full rotations for the same thing. The result is the Cybertruck drives like a go-kart. Parking lots, U-turns, tight suburban streets — you whip it around with almost no effort. It feels impossibly nimble for a truck this size.

It takes about 5 minutes to get used to. After that, every other vehicle’s steering feels sluggish by comparison.

The Sound System, Heated Everything, and the Screen

The audio system in the Cybertruck is genuinely impressive. Deep bass, crystal-clear highs, and it fills the entire cabin. Whether you’re streaming music, watching something on the 18.5” touchscreen, or running the Light Show — the sound quality is on par with premium systems you’d find in luxury sedans twice the price.

Heated seats and a heated steering wheel come standard. In a Chicago winter or a cold spring evening, you turn them on and the whole cabin becomes a cocoon. The seats are comfortable for long drives, and the steering wheel heats up fast.

And that 18.5-inch touchscreen is the command center for everything. Navigation, climate, music, streaming, games, vehicle settings — it’s the largest screen in any production vehicle and it’s genuinely useful, not just a showpiece.

The Modes: Cool Extras, Not the Main Event

The Cybertruck has a bunch of built-in modes that are fun to play with. They’re not why you rent it — but they add to the experience.

  • Light Show — Choreographed headlights, taillights, and light bar synced to music. Best at night. Great party trick.
  • Tron Mode — A Tesla x Disney collaboration. The dashboard becomes a glowing Tron Lightcycle with custom sounds and ambient lighting. Cool to show off.
  • Camp Mode — Keeps climate, music, and charging running all night on barely any battery. Good for tailgating or just hanging out.
  • Game Mode — Built-in games on the big screen. Fun while parked and waiting.
  • Netflix & streaming — Stream anything on the 18.5” screen with that sound system. Park somewhere scenic and you’ve got a private theater.

I walk you through all of these at pickup. They’re nice bonuses — but honestly, the truck itself is the experience. The aesthetic, Autopilot, and how it drives are what people remember.

How to Rent a Cybertruck in Chicago

Everything goes through Turo, the peer-to-peer car rental platform. Here’s the process:

  • Step 1: Go to my Turo listing and select your dates.
  • Step 2: Choose your protection plan at checkout. Turo offers multiple tiers from basic to premium coverage.
  • Step 3: Pick up in Palatine, IL. I meet every guest personally, walk you through the controls, the touchscreen, Autopilot, and all the features.
  • Step 4: Drive. Enjoy. Turn heads.

The whole pickup takes about 15–20 minutes. By the time you drive off, you’ll feel completely confident. I also ask guests to download the Tesla app beforehand so you can lock/unlock the truck from your phone.

Who can rent?

You must be 25 or older to book the Cybertruck on Turo. This is Turo’s requirement for Deluxe class vehicles.

How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Cybertruck?

Rates start around $325/day and go up to $400–$450 for peak weekends, prom season, and holidays. Longer trips get a multi-day discount. The earlier you book, the better the price — rates go up closer to your date.

What About Other Cybertruck Rentals in Chicago?

There are a handful of Cybertrucks available on Turo in the Chicago area. Prices range from around $150/day on the low end to $375/day on the high end. Most of them are stock — bare stainless steel, standard configuration.

Mine is different. It’s a Foundation Edition with a full gloss black wrap. Most Cybertrucks look the same — mine doesn’t. The black wrap transforms the entire look of the truck and photographs completely differently, which matters if you’re renting for content, a special occasion, or just want something nobody else has.

Beyond the wrap: 5.0 rating across every review, All-Star Host status, a personal walkthrough at pickup, and a dedicated website with all the details. No other Cybertruck host in Chicago offers that combination.

Charging & Range: What to Know

The Cybertruck has 325 miles of range on a full charge. For a day rental, that’s more than enough — most guests drive 100–150 miles.

If you need to charge, Tesla’s Supercharger network is the best in the business. There are Supercharger stations throughout the Chicago area and across Illinois. A 15-minute charge gets you about 137 miles of range at newer V3.5+ stations.

I deliver the truck fully charged. If you’d rather not worry about returning it at the same level, you can add the Prepaid EV Recharge option at checkout and return it with at least 30 miles of range.
