Why Chicago Parents Are Booking Cybertrucks for Prom Instead of Limos

By Jonathan Hsieh · March 2026 · 6 min read

Every year, the same conversation happens in group chats across the Chicago suburbs: “What are we doing for prom transportation?”

And every year, the answer used to be the same. Stretch limo. Split the cost. Everyone piles in. It’s fine.

But something shifted. Last prom season, I started getting booking requests from parents in Palatine, Schaumburg, and Arlington Heights — not for a limo, but for my Tesla Cybertruck. And the reviews they left told me everything I needed to know about where prom transportation is headed.

“We rented it for our son’s prom send off. Thank you Jonathan for being an awesome host and making this experience so worth it!! Definitely worth it and would rent with him again!!”

— Irene

“I had soooo much fun!! I used it to drive my son to his prom! I didn’t even want to return the truck.”

— Lynda

The Limo Is Dead. Here’s What Replaced It.

Teens today grew up on TikTok and Instagram. They don’t want to show up in the same stretch limo their parents rented in 2005. They want an arrival that stops traffic, gets filmed, and gets posted. The Cybertruck does all three without trying.

This isn’t just a local thing. Exotic car rentals for prom are one of the fastest-growing trends in teen events nationwide. And in the Chicago suburbs, the Cybertruck is the one everyone’s asking about.

There’s a reason Kanye, the Kardashians, Shaq, and Pharrell all drive one. The Cybertruck isn’t just a vehicle — it’s a status symbol. And for one night, your son or daughter gets to pull up in the same thing.

Here’s what that actually means for prom night:

  • Make your kid the star of the night. When the Cybertruck pulls up, every head turns. Every phone comes out. Your teen walks out of that truck and they’re the main character. That’s a confidence boost no limo can give.
  • Give them a story they’ll tell for years. Nobody remembers the limo. Everyone remembers the Cybertruck. Their friends will be talking about it long after prom is over.
  • The whole night becomes an event. Light show in the parking lot before prom. Tron mode on the drive. Netflix on the 18.5” screen while waiting. The truck doesn’t just get them there — it IS the experience.
  • Prom photos that actually stand out. Every other kid is posing in front of a house or a generic car. Your teen is standing next to a stainless steel spaceship. Those photos hit different.

How It Compares to a Limo (Honestly)

Most parents are comparing a Cybertruck rental to a traditional limo, so here’s the real breakdown:

Stretch LimoCybertruck
Cost$400–$1,000+ (4-6 hours)Starting around $400/day (full day)

Who drivesA hired chauffeurYou (parent, 25+) chauffeur your teen

The biggest difference? With a limo, you’re paying for a few hours of transportation. With the Cybertruck, you have it for the entire day. Drive to the photo spot. Pull up to prom. Hit a late-night drive-through after. Do the light show in the driveway when you get home. It’s a full experience, not just a ride.

What Parents Actually Want to Know

How does the booking work?

Everything goes through Turo, the peer-to-peer car rental platform. You book the dates, select your protection plan, and pick up the truck from my location in Palatine. Full insurance coverage is included through Turo — you pick the level that works for you.

Can my teen drive?

No — all drivers must be 25 or older. A parent, family member, or family friend books the truck and chauffeurs your teen to and from prom. No exceptions, no underage drivers. Most parents love this part — you get to be part of the moment and drive the Cybertruck yourself.

Is it safe?

The Cybertruck has every safety feature Tesla makes: adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, lane keeping, and 360-degree cameras. I also do a full personal walkthrough at pickup so you’re 100% comfortable before driving off.

What if prom is only a few hours? Do I need a full day?

Most parents book for 1-2 days. That gives you time for pre-prom photos, the drive to the venue, the pickup after, and — if you’re smart — a fun family day with the truck the next morning. Trust me, you’ll want the extra time.

How far in advance should I book?

As soon as possible. Chicago prom season runs late April through mid-May, and weekends fill up fast. Last year I was fully booked through most of May. The earlier you book, the lower the price — rates go up as prom dates get closer. Booking 4+ days in advance also gets you a 10% discount on Turo.

Prom Dates Are Filling Up

Illinois prom season peaks between April 25 and May 16, 2026. That’s only a few weekends, and there’s only one Cybertruck.

Prices start around $400/day but go up as prom dates get closer. The parents who book early pay less. The ones who wait pay more — if it’s even still available.
